Roland's Bio

Roland’s musical performances began in the 5th grade singing soprano in the St. Paul’s Boys’ Choir in Des Moines, Iowa.  That lasted until puberty at which time he moved to other pursuits typical of young spirits.  Some years later he attended the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield Kansas and was seduced by the all night campfire acoustic jam scene.  Inspired to learn an instrument, he studied harmonica for several years under the world class master Tulsa Read of Shawnee Kansas and has developed a style which might be described as bluesgrassy.   He has honed his skills at  monthly acoustic jams (which he moderates), as well as, performances throughout the area with “Brookside Express” formed in 2003 and “Electric Prairie”; both well accomplished acoustic bluegrass/Americana bands.  Roland picked up guitar along the way and provides rhythm/vocals on a number of songs when he’s not playing harp or washboard. He considers hightlights of his music career to include performing at the Folly Theater, winning the “best of show” with Brookside Express for the Metropolitan Arts Council Performing Arts Showcase in 2009 at the Copaken Theater, performing on Stage 5 at the Walnut Valley Festival, and recently playing for the Mayor of Des Moines on stage with classical guitarist Paul Wilson.
